Ar Rusayl Fort

Al Rusayl Fort

Ar Rusayl Fort lies in the village of Rusayl in the Muscat Governorate in Oman.

I know absolutely nothing about the history of this fort. If you know anything, please mail me.

The village of Rusayl is situated at the mouth of the Wadi Samail, also known as the Samail Gap, which has long been a main route from Muscat to the interior of Oman. As a result, several fortifications, walled villages and watch towers were erected along the wadi to protect the Omanis against attempted invasions.

The fort was built on a low ridge on the east bank of the wadi. It consists of a small rectangular fortlet and a round tower, only some 25 meters apart. Both have very small entrance doors of just some 1.2 meter high. They have been restored in the 1990s.

The exterior of the fortlet and the tower are freely accessible. Both its doors are closed, however. I like the combination of fortlet and separate tower. Al Jafnayn Tower is within viewing distance, on the opposite bank of the wadi, to the south.
