Sa'al Towers

Sa'al Towers

The Sa'al Towers stand in the village of Sa'al in the Muscat Governorate in Oman.

I don't have any historical information about the Sa'al Towers. If you know anything, please mail me.

The village of Sa'al is situated next to a wadi in a small valley in the Hajar Mountains. The towers were built as watch towers by the local tribe to protect their village and oasis.

In the village itself stands the best surviving tower, which I dubbed Tower A. On a rocky plateau, across the wadi, stands the ruin of another tower, which I dubbed Tower B. Both towers were built out of sarooj (a traditional mix of clay and limestone) on a foundation of rocks.

On a hill, opposite the village, I found another ruin, which I dubbed Tower C. To be honest, I don't really know if this was a tower. I think it is more likely that this was a Bronze Age beehive tomb. They are quite common in the Hajar Mountain range.

The towers of Sa'al are freely accessible. I especially liked Tower A and the location of the towers, a small village in a quiet valley.
