Al Fulaij Castle

Al Fulaij Castle

Al Fulaij Castle, sometimes also called a fort or spelled as Falaij or Fulij, lies next to the village of Aflaj in the Al Batinah South Governorate in Oman.

Al Fulaij Castle was built around 1800 by Sayyid Sultan bin Ahmed, apparently to accommodate his wife. He later also used it as a hunting lodge. At present, it is used as a venue for art shows and I read it also holds a movie theater with a capacity of 500 visitors.

The castle has a square ground plan with round towers at 2 diagonally opposite corners. It is surrounded by a long defensive wall.

Al Fulaij Castle was closed when I came by, although I was there during regular visiting hours. Maybe it can only be visited as a guest of an art show or movie screening. Too bad, I was curious about its interior.
