Al Fateh Castle

Al Fateh Castle

Al Fateh Castle, sometimes also called Bawshar Fort and also known as Bait Al Kabir, lies in the village of Al Fath in the Muscat Governorate in Oman.

Al Fateh Castle was built during the 18th century by Sayyid Khamis bin Salem bin Mohamed Al Busaidi. It was built next to a falaj (a man-made, partly underground water channel) and served as the residence of Sayyid Khamis and his extended family, as well as protection for the nearby oasis.

The castle has a square ground plan with 2 round towers on diagonally opposite corners and is surrounded by a rectangular wall. Up until at least the 2010s it was a picturesque ruin, but it is in the process of being rebuilt since a couple of years.

When I visited Al Fateh Castle, it was an open building site. I like the restored appearance of the castle, but I didn't like the outlook of the rebuilt surrounding walls. But maybe that will get better once it is finished. I read that there were plans to use the castle as a museum when finished. Sur Jal Fort is nearby.
