Bait Al Yahmadi Castle

Bait Al Yahmadi Castle

Bait Al Yahmadi Castle lies in the village of Al Ahmadi in the Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate in Oman. Bait roughly translates back to 'house'.

Bait Al Yahmadi Castle is said to have been built in the 18th century by Sheikh Hafidh of the Al Maskary tribe. It served as a place of refuge for the villagers in times of trouble, and during more peaceful times it was a residence and meeting place of the Al Maskary elders.

The castle has a rectangular ground plan with one slender round tower on one corner. It is surrounded by a low rectangular wall, in which a 'majlis' (meeting room) is incorporated in one corner. In front of the castle entrance runs a falaj (a man-made, partly underground water channel), called Falaj Al Ifreet. It was restored in 1989.

Bait Al Yahmadi Castle can be visited for free. As with almost all castles in Oman, its interior is bare. A nice small rural castle. Al Ahmadi Tower is in the oasis nearby.
