Verdelles Castle

Verdelles Castle

Verdelles Castle, locally known as Château de Verdelles, lies southeast of the village of Poillé-sur-Vègre in the Sarthe department in France.

Although a Lord of Verdelles is first being mentioned in several acts between 1190 and 1238, the present castle was built in the 1490s, when the Le Clerc de Juigné family were Lords of Verdelles. The building started out as a fortified castle but was finished as a Gothic mansion with lots of embellishments.

The Le Clerc de Juigné family held Verdelles Castle until the French Revolution, when it was confiscated as 'National Property'. It was then subsequently sold to a citizen; Pierre Fautrat de la Guérinière. Later, during the 19th century, the castle became part of a farm and was used for storage and habitation by the farmers. In 1978 it was bought by the present owners, who restored it to its present appearance.

As Verdelles Castle is still a private residence, it can only be visited externally. A beautiful little castle in a rural location.
