Mukhrani Castle

Mukhrani Castle lies in the village of the same name, in the Mtskheta municipality in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in Georgia.

According to an inscription in the castle, Mukhrani Castle was built in the 30s of the 18th century by Mamuka Mukhranbatoni with the help of Levan Mukhranbatoni. The lords of Mukhrani used the castle as their residence.

In 1756 Konstantine Mukhranbatoni described the castle as having been destroyed by enemies and its villagers having fled the area. He then rebuilt the castle and opened it up as a place of refuge for villagers in times of trouble. In 1895 the last private owner of the castle died and the castle was sold.

During Communist rule, laboratories of an agricultural institute were situated in the castle.

Mukhrani Castle has a square ground plan with round towers at its corners. It used to be part of a bigger fortification which has almost completely disappeared.

At present Mukhrani Castle is used as a monastery. Sadly enough it was closed when I came by. I would have loved to visit the interior of this nice castle.
