Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort

Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort lies in the town of the same name, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra actually consists of the present modern village and the old abandoned fishing village. The fort is situated at the edge of the old village, guarding the landward approach to the old village from the raids of rivaling tribes. I could not find any historical information about the fort. If you know anything; please mail me. I think it was built somewhere in the late 19th or early 20th century.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort has a square ground plan with one square corner tower and a projecting round tower halfway its western wall.

The old village was abandoned by its inhabitants somewhere during the 1960s for reasons unknown. All its coral brick buildings; houses and mosques, are now slowly crumbling away. You can freely roam its streets, courtyards and explore the rooms of the houses. According to locals the empty village is supposed to be haunted.

At present Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort can not be visited as it is being rebuilt. I really hope they are still going to do something about its exterior because now it looks like an ugly new concrete structure. But even if the fort is not really worth your visit at this moment, the abandoned village surely is!
