Tourin Castle

Tourin Castle

Tourin Castle lies east of the town of Lismore, in County Waterford, in Ireland.

When exactly Tourin Castle, a rectangular tower house next to the River Blackwater, was built is unclear. Some sources state it dates back to 1560, other mention 1450. In the early 17th century a rectangular house was built against its northeast facade.

During the 17th century the castle was owned by the Roche family. Later that century it passed to the Nettles. Tourin was bought by Richard Musgrave from the Nettles in 1780 and in 1840 his grandson built the more spacious and classically proportioned Tourin House close by on higher ground. Apparently after they moved into their new home the tower house was abandoned and the annex was used to house employees of the estate.

At present Tourin Castle seems to be empty and it can not be visited. It is situated on the grounds of the 19th century Tourin House, which can be visited. The annex of the castle is still inhabited by people working on the estate.
