Al Khutm Tower

Al Khutm Tower

Al Khutm Tower lies in the village of Al Wahrah in the Al Dhahirah Governorate in Oman.

Al Khutm Tower may not look like much, but it is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site. It dates back to the Hafit Period of Bronze Age human settlement in Oman, during the 3rd millennium BC. The area here is also known as Bat. It is known for its archaeological sites of one of the most complete and well-preserved ensembles of settlements and necropolises from the 3rd millennium BC worldwide. There are numerous beehive tombs on the surrounding hills and 7 towers, of which Al Khutm is one.

The tower is thought to have been a fortified complex. It has a circular ground plan of 20-25 m in diameter, in which there are 2 rows of parallel compartments on either side of a central corridor. There is also a well in the corridor.

Al Khutm Tower can freely be visited. An interesting site because of its age and easy to visit if you are going to nearby Al Wardi Castle.
