Vignou Tower

The Vignou Tower, locally known as Tour Vignou or Vignoux, lies the park of the castle of Attre, in the village of Attre, in the province of Hainaut in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

The Vignou Tower served as the keep of a square castle, flanked by square corner towers. That castle, called Attre, was first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century.

In 1520, the castle and seigniory of Attre passed to the Franeau family.

During the 18th century, its owners acquired the title of Count. They demolished the medieval castle to make way for a new neoclassical castle better suited to their new status. This became the present Attre Castle, built in 1752, about 200 meters away. The Vignou Tower was then incorporated into a newly designed English landscape park behind Attre Castle.

The tower is called Vignou because legend says it was once the hideout of a brigand or the home of a hermit by that name around 1700.

Currently, the Vignou Tower is a heavily overgrown ruin with almost no architectural details, so it’s not very interesting. However, the castle and park of Attre are beautiful, making the tower worth a visit.
