Torreelen Castle

Torreelen Castle, locally known as Hoeve De Torreelen, lies in the fields southwest of the village of Wulveringem, in the province of West Flanders in the Flemish region in Belgium.

Its local name literally translates to "Farm The Towers".

I could not find any historical information about this castle. Other than that it was built around the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century. It was a rectangular castle flanked by 4 round towers. In 1640 it burned down after being struck by lightning. After that, its ruins; 3 towers and some other wall parts, were transformed into a farm.

During World War I the castle was situated only 14 kilometers from the front. In that time the two remaining towers lost their upper parts. During World War II it served as a medical post.

At present Torreelen Castle is private property and used as a residence. It can not be visited but it can easily be seen from the public road. A nice house! Beauvoorde Castle is nearby.
