Tek Kale Castle

Tek Kale Castle, locally known as Tek Kale Kalesi, sometimes also known as Tekkale Kalesi or Dört Kilise Kalesi, lies on a rock in the village of Tekkale, in the province of Artvin in Turkey.

Tek Kale Castle was built out of rubble masonry during the 9th-10th century, when the area was part of the historical Georgian region of Tao. It was the seat of the Kavkasidze family.

This is all the information I was able to find about Tek Kale Castle. So, if you know more, please mail me.

Tek Kale Castle is situated on a large and steep rock in the middle of the Çoruh valley, protecting the northern approach to Tekkale village. A couple of towers and some walls remain on the western and southern part of the rock top. On the northern part these have disappeared, except for a small chapel. The original entrance would probably have been at the western side of the rock, but this has disappeared.

When I visited, Tek Kale Castle was inaccessible. Too bad, it looked great. As of 2023 the castle is slowly disappearing underwater as the reservoir of the newly operational Yusufeli Dam is filling up.
