Rougemont Castle

Château de Rougemont

Rougemont Castle, locally known as Château de Rougemont, lies south of the village of the same name in the Côte-d'Or department in France.

The castle is sometimes also known as Château des Tours (which translates to castle of towers). It consists of only one wall of a feudal keep with curved corners. It is situated on a small motte, which previously might have held 2 towers, hence its alternative name.

Rougemont Castle was first mentioned between 1076 and 1100. A Geraldus de Turri was mentioned as the local lord between 1090 and 1096. The castle was also mentioned in 1205 and 1298. Later it passed to the Counts of Tonnerre.

In 1411, during the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War, the castle was occupied by an Armagnac garrison. As a result it was destroyed during a 6-day siege by a force of 1700 Burgundians with artillery.

At present the site of Rougemont Castle can freely be visited. Sadly enough the ruin is very much overgrown, so it is hard to see details. But it is a nice, quiet place for a picnic.
