Riva Castle

Riva Castle, locally known as Riva Kalesi, lies in the village of the same name, on the Black Sea coast in the province of Istanbul in Turkey.

Riva Castle, sometimes said to be of Byzantine origin, was probably built by the Genoese during the 14th century. It was conquered near the end of the 14th century by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I. I was not able to find more historical information. If you know more; please mail me.

The castle, controlled by the garrison at Rumelifeneri Castle, was rebuilt upon its own foundations near the end of the 18th century, and was repaired more than once during the 19th century. In 2017 the castle was restored but it seems to have been closed ever since.

The small castle sits on a rock next to the beach of the quiet seaside village and near the site where the Riva stream meets the Black Sea.

A nice castle. Too bad it wasn't accessible.
