Puegnago Castle

Puegnago Castle

Puegnago Castle, locally known as Castello di Puegnago, lies in the village of Puegnago del Garda, in the Brescia province in the Lombardy region in Italy.

Puegnago Castle was founded around the 9th/10th century as a refuge for the locals in a reaction to raids of Hungarians frequenting the area. In Italian, these kinds of refuge castles are called a 'ricetto'.

In 1827 the keep / gate tower was lowered and the present bell tower was built upon it. I was not able to find any other historical information about the castle. It has a slightly oval shape, its walls mainly following the outline of the hill it was built on.

Today, Puegnago Castle is private property. Apparently it is sometimes used for events, but normally it is closed to visitors. This is one of least interesting castles to visit in this area.

Puegnago del Garda is situated in an area called Valtènesi. This area roughly encompasses the hilly lowland between the southwest bank of Lake Garda and the mountains. During the 10th and 11th century several settlements in Valtènesi built similar castles as Puegnago; like Bedizzole, Carzago, Moniga, Padenghe, Polpenazze and Soiano. So, if you like castles, this is surely an area to visit.
