Neuville Castle

Château de Neuville-sur-Ailette

Neuville Castle, France, locally known as Château de Neuville-sur-Ailette, lies in the village of the same name in the Aisne department in France.

Neuville Castle was first mentioned in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1593 the castle was dismantled on the orders of the governor of Laon, Des Rieux, after it had been the scene of a bloody episode in the French Wars of Religion.

Up until WW I, a large square tower of the castle remained, although it had been cut in two by an explosion during the dismantling of the castle. These vestiges disappeared at the same time as the whole of the village, under the French bombardments which preceded the Nivelle offensive of April 1917.

Neuville Castle can freely be visited, but as you can see there is almost nothing left. The garden and the Saint-Julien church are nice, but the castle remnant is not interesting.
