Montgon Castle

Montgon Castle, locally known as Château de Montgon, lies next to the village of the same name, in the Haute-Loire department in France.

Montgon Castle was first mentioned around 1250. At that time the Léotoing family were Lords of Montgon and the castle was probably just a simple fortification. Towards the end of the 14th century the lordship of Léotoing-Montgon reached its greatest expansion. Probably at that time the earlier castle was replaced by the present one.

During the early 16th century the defenses of the castle were reinforced by the Léotoings. Later that same century it passed to the Cordeboeuf de Beauverger family. They lived in the castle until 1690 when it was abandoned.

The castle ruin was used as a stone quarry in the 19th century, resulting in its destruction.

At present Montgon Castle is fenced off due to the risk of falling masonry and can thus not be visited. A nice small ruin which hopefully will be saved before it crumbles.
