St. Mark's Tower

St. Mark Tower

St. Mark's Tower, locally known as Kula svetog Marka, lies in the city of Trogir, in the county of Split-Dalmatia in Croatia.

Trogir is a city located on a somewhat rectangular island in a sea channel between Čiovo Island and the mainland. It was once a fortified city, and the site of the present tower was originally just the northwest corner of the city walls.

Construction of the tower began in 1470 by the Venetians and progressed slowly, only being finished at the end of the 15th century. Initially, the sturdy tower, connected to the north and west city walls, was almost surrounded by water. The tower was originally topped with a parapet, but this had already disappeared by the first half of the 17th century.

The circular tower has two levels with walls that are up to 3 meters thick.

In recent years, it seems to have been used as a small bar, but it is now abandoned and inaccessible. It's a nice tower, though it's a shame you cannot go inside. Nearby is also the early 15th-century Kamerlengo Castle. The old city with its alleyways and historical buildings is also worth visiting.
