Kaleköy Castle

Kaleköy Castle

Kaleköy Castle, locally known as Kaleköy Kalesi, lies northeast of the village of the same name, in the province of Sivas in Turkey.

Nothing is known about this castle. I guess it was a Byzantine construction, built to guard a route through this river valley. It was built on a roughly triangular outcrop of rock on the valley floor, next to the Kaldırok stream. It looks like it had 2 sets of walls protecting it. I suspect the sides of the outcrop originally were much steeper. Especially the south side is much less steep today, probably because of accumulated rubble from the collapsed walls and erosion.

The name of the village; Kaleköy, literally translates back to 'castle village'. Before 1926 the village was named Emlekkale. In Ottoman records, it was called Kaldırok/Kaldurak Kalesi. I think all these names applied to the castle itself also.

Kaleköy Castle is freely accessible. Not a very interesting site.
