Hodoumont Castle

Hodoumont Castle, locally known as Château d'Hodoumont and sometimes incorrectly spelled Houdemont, lies west of the hamlet of Goesnes, in the province of Namur in the Wallonia region in Belgium.
The exact date of the construction of Hodoumont Castle is unknown. Around 1200, the manor of Goesnes was under the jurisdiction of the Principality of Liège. It was protected by several fortifications, including the Hodoumont Tower. This is the square keep we see today, with walls up to 2 meters thick. Around 1300, a residential building with three round corner towers was added to the keep, along with a chapel and a fortified farm. The entire complex was surrounded by a moat, of which the current pond is a remnant.
In 1763, the castle was acquired by Charles Dauvin, Lord of Burdinne. He renovated the castle to its present appearance.
Currently, Hodoumont Castle is private property and cannot be visited. It is a charming, simple castle set in a pastoral landscape.
