Harala Castle

Harala Castle

Harala Castle, locally known as Harala Kalesi, lies on a hill next to the village of Altınyazı, in the province of Edirne in Turkey.

Harala Castle was probably built by the Byzantine Empire in the 13th century. It was situated on a strategic site; a solitary, oblong shaped high hill offering wide views over the surrounding Thracian plains. The castle was taken by the Ottomans in 1362. I was not able to find more historical information; if you know more, please mail me.

It may have been the site of the original village of Altınyazı. If so, the Ottomans, as often, choose not to live on the old location but moved the village to the foot of the castle hill.

Currently, the only visible remains of Harala Castle are a part of a ruined square tower and 2 other solitary wall parts. The lake below the hill is a reservoir that was created some decades ago.

At present Harala Castle is freely accessible. Not very spectacular but I liked the solitude and views.
