Dunalong Castle

Dunalong Castle lies on the east side of Sherkin Island, in County Cork in Ireland.

Dunalong Castle was an O'Driscoll castle reputed to have been built in about 1460 by Florence O'Driscoll. In 1537 the citizens of Waterford attacked it in revenge for the O'Driscoll owners having stolen a cargo of wine.

In 1602, during the Battle of Kinsale, the Spanish garrisoned many of the castles in the region, including Sir Fineen O'Driscolls rebuilt castles of Dunalong on Sherkin Island and Dunasead in Baltimore. After their defeat they handed over the castles to Captain Roger Harvey. Sir Fineen was left with nothing and joined the Spanish back to Spain.

In 1645 the O'Driscolls surrendered it to Captain Bennett from Cromwell's army. During the late 17th century Beecher family took possession and remained in occupation up to 1768.

Dunalong Castle is now a ruin, it can not be visited, but you can partially walk around it. A not very spectacular ruin but on a nice location.
