Don Mario Castle

Don Mario Castle, locally known as Castillo de Don Mario, lies east of the town of Archena in the province of Murcia in Spain.

Although this building may look to some as a small castle, it is not. It is a former dovecote, I think from the 18th or 19th century, which was later rebuilt and turned into a residence. At first it was known as Castillo Fontes, after an important local family. Later, a member of that family gave it to Don José Spreáfico, a doctor, as thanks for a treatment and subsequent cure of a rheumatic disease. Don José's son was Don Mario Spreáfico, who was also a well known doctor, who died here in 1966. In later decades the building was refurbished and turned into an office.

At present Don Mario Castle stands empty and can not be visited. Not very interesting.
