Chailuri Castle

Chailuri Castle, locally also known as Niakhura Castle, lies south of the village of Patara Chailuri, in the Sagarejo municipality in the Kakheti region in Georgia.

When Chailuri Castle was built is not known, but presumably it was built in the 16th century. It guarded the entrance to the Iori valley and, together with nearby Manavi Castle, it created a barrier for enemies on their way to Tbilisi. I could not find any other historical information about the castle. If you know more; please mail me.

During the 1980s the castle was completely rebuilt which makes it hard to see what is original and what's not.

Chailuri Castle, situated on a small hill, has an elongated pentagonal ground plan with 4 D-shaped towers at 4 corners.

At present Chailuri Castle is freely accessible. A beautiful small castle but a bit empty.
