Turina Castle

Turina Castle

Turina Castle, locally known as Utvrda Turina, lies above the town of Skradin, in the county of Šibenik-Knin in Croatia.

The first fortification on this site, a rocky ridge between 2 valleys next to the Krka River, was a pre-historic hill fort of the Liburnians.

The medieval castle Turina was built during the rule of Paul I Šubić of Bribir, between 1273 and 1312. The town, which already existed in Roman times as Scardona, flourished under the rule of the House of Šubić, who were bans (rulers) of Croatia, as they made Skradin their capital.

Between 1522 and 1684 Skradin fell under Ottoman rule. They were followed by the Venetians until 1794. When the castle was abandoned, I couldn't find out. I think that happened in the 19th century, after which the locals must have used it as a quarry.

The remains of the castle are not much to look at, but the view from the top is nice. Skradin itself is also a charming little town, albeit a bit touristic.
