Ras Al Khaimah Fort

Ras Al Khaimah Fort lies in the center of the city with the same name, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.

There was an earlier fort in the town of Ras Al Khaimah. According to some sources, that earlier fort was destroyed at least twice; in 1621 by the Portuguese and in 1820 by the British. That fort has now disappeared but stood some 700 meters to the north of the present fort.

The present fort was built between the British attacks 1809 and 1819 outside the old town. On old British maps it is depicted as a square fort strengthened with 3 round towers and a single big tower. Later it was developed into a larger fortification. It also served as the residence of the ruling Quwasim family until 1964. Later it became a police headquarters and a prison, before it was finally converted into the National Museum in 1987.

Ras Al Khaimah Fort has a square ground plan with 2 square towers on opposite corners.

At present Ras Al Khaimah Fort can be visited for a fee. A nice fort.
