Fort Ossenmarkt

Fort Ossenmarkt, locally known as Fort aan de Ossenmarkt (which literally translates to Fort at the Oxmarket), lies in the town of Weesp, in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands.

Fort Ossenmarkt is a small tower fort built in 1861. It was part of the Weesp Fortress which itself became part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam in 1901. In 1876 the east side of the fort was equipped with an earthen glacis which partially filled in the moat.

In the late 1940s the fort was used as a mushroom farm until the 1950s when it definitely lost its military function. Later it was also used as a practice location for the local fire brigade.

In 1976 Fort Ossenmarkt was bought by the local government. In the 1980s the earthen glacis was removed and later the fort was restored to its original appearance.

At present the fort is used for cultural and commercial purposes. It can only be visited on special occasions, which I still have to go to because I am very curious how its interior looks.
