Al Muntarib Castle

Al Muntarib Castle

Al Muntarib Castle, also often spelled as Mintarib, lies in the town of Bidiya, in the Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate in Oman.

Al Muntarib Castle is said to have been built in the 13th century, during the reign of the Nabhani dynasty. As such, it is considered one of the oldest fortifications in the governorate.  It served to protect the eponymous date palm oasis situated directly south of it. I don't know anything about its history. If you know anything, please mail me.

The castle has a simple square plan, with only one round corner tower. It has only one, small, gate.

Al Muntarib Castle used to be open for visits, but when I came by, I found it closed with a weathered sign telling it was closed for maintenance. I suspect that it is a multi-year project and don't know when it will open again. Too bad, it looked interesting from the outside.
