Beraant Castle

Beraant Castle, also known as Zemo Khodasheni Castle, lies in the village of Zemo Khodasheni in the Telavi municipality in the Kakheti region in Georgia.

Beraant Castle was built between 1760 and 1784, next to a 16th century church. I don't know anything about its history. If you know something; please mail me.

The castle is of a local type, called a 'wine cellar tower', which means it consisted of a building used to produce and store wine and a tower to defend it. In Kakheti I found one other of this type of castle; Adamaant Castle.

The rectangular tower has 3 floors, with a wine press on the first floor. There are 20 'kvevri' (Georgian earthenware wine jugs) buried in the basement.

At present Beraant Castle is fenced off, so not accessible. A pity, as I would have liked to see its interior. A very nice tower house.
