Araç Castle

Araç Castle

Araç Castle, locally known as Araç Kalesi, lies in the village of the same name, in the province of Kastamonu in Turkey.

Araç Castle was built by the Byzantine Empire on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Araç river. It is highly probable that it was preceded by an earlier fortification. During the Ottoman period, after 1460, it was repaired. In time, the east walls of the castle were demolished and replaced by houses.

Nothing more is known about its history. If you know more, please mail me.

Araç Castle is freely accessible. Although there is nothing to see inside, it provides a nice view of the surrounding area, even on a rainy day, like when I visited.
