Altena Castle

Altena Castle

Altena Castle, locally known as Kasteel Altena, lies in the town of Kruibeke, in the province of East Flanders in the Flemish region in Belgium.

There was already a castle at this site in 1584 when it burned down. That castle might have dated back to the 13th century. Ten years later, the burned ruin was rebuilt as a moated castle.

It was continuously owned by the noble Lanfranchye/Lanfranchie family, who owned the Manor of Kruibeke, until 1850. Then it was acquired by the Le Boucq de Beaudignies family. Julius le Boucq de Beaudignies had the castle enlarged in 1878.

From 1946 until 2014 the castle was used by a couple of religious congregations as a rest house and study center. At present, a new use for the castle has still to be determined. I believe, it is now temporarily used as a office.

Altena Castle can not be visited. A nice castle.
