Ajman Fort

Ajman Fort lies in the center of the city of the same name, in the emirate of Ajman in the United Arab Emirates.

Ajman Fort is believed to have first been built in the late 18th century. In 1820 the fort was shelled by British war ships and destroyed. It was rebuilt by Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, who ruled from 1838 until 1841. It was used as a royal residence until 1970. Up until then it was added to and restored several times. After the ruler left the fort to move to a new palace, the fort was taken into use as the headquarters of the Ajman Police. They of course adapted the fort to their use. In 1981 the police also left to move to a new headquarters after which the old fort was partly torn down. In the late 1980s the fort was completely rebuilt and turned into a museum.

At present Ajman Fort houses the Ajman Museum and can be visited for a fee as a guest of the museum. It is a nice fort but I liked the newer additions less.
