Trošenj Castle

Trošenj Castle

Trošenj Castle, locally known as Utvrda Trošenj, lies east of the village of Kistanje, in the county of Šibenik-Knin in Croatia.

Trošenj Castle was probably built in the 13th, or the beginning of the 14th century. It was built on a cliff above the right bank of the Krka River. This was a strategic site, as here an important trade route passed the Krka canyon via a wooden bridge. The castle was constructed by the Šubić family, local Croatian nobles, to gain control over this bridge. On the opposite site of the canyon another castle was situated, Nečven, which was held by the Šubić's rivals, also local Croatian nobles; the Nelipić family.

At some point in time, the castle fell into the hands of the Ottomans. In 1684, they were driven out by Venetian troops. During the fighting, the bridge was destroyed and the castle suffered so much damage that it was abandoned, after which it fell to ruin. The bridge was also never rebuilt.

Trošenj Castle can freely be visited. It will take a nice walk of about 30 min to reach it from the nearest road.
